Hits and Misses

Here are some of my hits and misses of the year in my writing:

Hits

"After the war, a powerful and rich white class emerged over the working black class. Afrikaans became more assertive (Grundlingh). Here Grundlingh illustrates how the war affected religion and minorities. They sort of thanked God for this war and suffering in a sense that they were being prepared for chastising."

This is a piece from my research paper. I cited what I was saying well while also using a proper, academic voice.  

"The group is discussing and trying to learn everyone’s names, but no one has time for Piggy: “Then,’ went on Piggy, ‘that boy—I forget’ / ‘You’re talking too much’ said Jack Merridew. ‘Shut up, Fatty.’ / Laughter arose” (21)."

 This is an example from my literary analysis. It represents my successful work with embedding quotes to make their meaning more effective as I elaborate on Piggy's roll in William Golding's Lord of the Flies.
"I thank God for this experience for teaching, inspiring, and humbling me. Some situations may seem completely bad, but that’s not always the case. A lot can be teaching moments, and that’s what I saw in this experience."

This is a piece from my personal narrative. Here, I reflected on my paper and what I got out of the experience and left the reader with something to think about, which is important in personal narratives.

Misses

"Not only was society affected by the war, but so was the long-lasting history of South Africa."

This is a piece from my research paper. It shows that I need improvement dealing with using more complex transition sentences.

"Through this quotation" "my thesis"
These are both things I said too many times throughout my literary analysis. I needed to improve on my voice and word choice, which I have done.

"A typical house owned by a wonderful elderly lady with old furniture and aged, hoarded valuables."
This is a piece from my personal narrative. I wasn't using vivid and sensory detail the way I was supposed to.

What I have learned about myself as a writer and my Improvements

     Over the course of this year, I've learned a lot about myself as a writer. Through the research paper, literary analysis, and my personal narrative, I've really learned a lot. I find myself to be, surprisingly, a good writer. As Dr. D once commented on my post, she said I have a very good, academic voice. I can write about topics and use quotations and examples to back up what I say all while using a professional and reasonable voice. I've really learned that I am good at communicating with my readers and reaching them.      I've improved in multiple ways thanks to my English teacher's help, but a few improvements especially stand out to me. I have improved my work with quotations and reaching my readers on a new, more complex level. Areas I need to work on and why they are important

     As I read the comments on my research paper and my literary analysis, I really need to work on organization, transition, and repetition. On my research paper, I didn't specifically do well on organizing my three main points of my thesis and they didn't flow into each other particularly well. They kind of all complimented each other, so when I was explaining my reasoning, it got really repetitive. On my personal narrative, I struggled with the same things. I had an informal voice when I tried to transition from paragraph to paragraph, and my starting sentences got repetitive.      It is very important that I work on all three of these things as I grow as a writer. Whether I like it or not, flow, organization, transition, etc. are all important to help the reader read what you are saying without struggling and getting confused. I am a Writer Who

     I may not be the world's best writer, but I'd say I'm not say bad either. I am a writer who loves to write, but I also have my strengths and my weaknesses. I do well with using quotes and contextual evidence to support my claims. I am also good at choosing good and complex words to write juicy papers. This year I've become really good at doing things like embedding my quotes and having good sentence fluency, yet I sometimes struggle with multiple things.      I am a writer who is not so good at using vivid detail and concrete detail, which I learned in my personal narrative. I am not so good at making the reader feel as if they are at the moment I am writing about. I tried hard to work on that throughout my paper, but I just couldn't get the hang of it.
